A Single Step

Dear Me,

Lao Tzu, in the Tao Te Ching, so eloquently enlightened, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” This famous line imparts the knowledge that it is a simple and manageable task that begins even the most complex and monumental of journeys. Jeff Olson’s book ” The Slight Edge” is entirely about this. Success and progress are acquired through simple daily actions or inactions, mindfully chosen, and repeated consistently, over time. No matter how big the journey, how large the dream; know that every dream, every goal, starts with a first and fundamental step. It is with a simple action that we build a larger act; a small gesture to a big dream.

Yet, it must be emphasized, that it takes intention and courage to put forth the foot that should take this first step forward. We have got to will our-self forward. It takes the decision to act; that willingness to walk towards our dream, to get us there. And it’s not just the first step, but the everyday steps that build those dreams; piece by piece, foundation up, into existence. It’s constantly and consistently stepping forward that will get us there; that will build upon these seemingly more simple, manageable and achievable task, towards an immensely greater objective.

So while it is important to know the destination, to keep in mind the end goal, and always have our eye on the completed dream; It’s not about two years down the road, its about the next two months; Its about the next two weeks; we need to focus on the next two days; those next twenty minutes. What steps are we taking during that time, during this time, to bring us closer to our destination, our end-goal, to build our dreams? What can we be doing right now, right here, that will bring us closer to there and then?
